Mail: How to avoid mail automatically being Read?

Guys, when I delete an email, if I have an unread mail below it it automatically becomes a Read email.

Is there any way of avoiding this?

I know you can go back to the email and mark it as unread, but that becomes a bit tiresome after a while.
