Small miracle: by chance decided to use the App Switcher to close all open applications, etc. (with home button used to just double click on open app or whatever to close.) Most likely won't last for very long, but seeing no more "extra windows"/"clippings" (not sure what the
official term is).
On this iPad Air with no home button, was able to do this in two possible ways: first, from the
virtual home button via accessibility (screenshot below).
Or, from Apple: "On all iPad models: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, pause in the center of the screen, then lift your finger."

EDIT/UPDATE Next day, surprisingly still OK. Maybe clippings/extra windows gone for good, ancient history?? Originated perhaps from old iPad iTunes backup?
