I use IMAP to access my school Exchange account. They make use of public folders that everyone can see, and there are about 800,000 items in said public folders. And Mail seems to try to download all of those messages, and it displays them as all unread. I don't care about those public folders. I used Thunderbird, and I could choose to unsubscribe from it and never see it, but I don't seem to have that option in Mail which I want to switch to. Am I missing something? Thanks

Create a folder and call it something like "Mail" or "MyFolders" then move all the mailboxes you want access to into that box (sent, inbox, read, etc)

then in mail, set that folder to be your root folder (or whatever it is called). Then you will only see the folders inside your mail folder.
