Mail in iOS 10: One step back

I hate the fact that the arrows in the upper right when reading an email that are used to advance to the next or previous email message are now left/right arrows instead of the much more intuitive up/down arrows. To make it worse, the left arrow moves to the next message in the list (i.e. down) instead of going back to the previous message in the list, which is what I typically associate a left arrow doing (i.e. go back). Anyone else?

And as far as I can see, they are gone completely on iPads
