Mail: Is there a way to turn off the large Emoji size in Sonoma Mail?

In Apple Mail, if you create an emoji on a single line, it automatically gets size 48. I think it looks ugly as duck.

Is there a way to turn this behavior off?

I don't know how to turn it off, but a space before the emoji reduces the size.
