Mail Keeps Quitting Unexpectedly

I have a new MacBook Air. The Mail app was working fine until today. Now when I go to close Mail, typically by pressing red button top left, I get an error message saying Mail Closed Unexpectedly. Anyone any idea why this is happening and what I do to correct matters? Once or twice it has shown me the same error message BEFORE I attempt to close. Weird!
 
Actually, the problem is worse than I thought. As soon as I try to open a message, The Mail app Shuts Down and shows the error box as described in my initial message. By the way, my ISP is BT Internet.
