Last week I upgraded the OS on my Mac mini from Mountain Lion to El Capitan.
Following the upgrade, I am unable to download new email messages in Mail.

The settings are correct and I can send outgoing emails but I get an error message when it tries to connect to retrieve new mail.
I checked with my ISP and verified that the settings I had were correct. The same settings work & I am able to retrieve mail on my ipad.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Thanks.

Something to try, just a shot in the dark:

Go to mail preferences.
Open "accounts".
Click "advanced".
Note the first checkbox setting -- "Automatically detect and maintain account settings".

IF this has a checkmark, try UNchecking it and see if that changes anything.

IF this DOES NOT have a checkmark, try checking it and see if that changes anything.

Again, just a shot in the dark.

Beyond this, I would start tinkering with the settings.
I, too, have experienced periodic "glitches" with Mail vs. my ISP.
Very frustrating until you get it running again.

IF nothing else is working, consider using an app like Thunderbird to set up "a test account". Does T-bird work using the SAME SETTINGS as Mail.app ??
