Mail not deleting emails?

I bought my macbook today after dropping my old one and killing the screen. When I went to import my gmail, ALL of my emails came into my mac. Ones that have been deleted--I mean every email from when I opened the account. They do not show up if I log in at gmail.com, but only on this mail app. I've tried deleting them, and they just show up again. I've restarted both the mail app and my mac and can't figure it out... The gmail is set up through IMAP and it won't let me switch over to POP?
