Hi there

I have some BTInternet e-mail accounts which are hosted by Yahoo. I download my e-mails to my Mac into Mail using pop3. I use IMAP on my iPod Touch and my android mobile but at the moment they are are not set to get the e-mail.

Yesterday someone tried to e-mail me but I wasn't getting their e-mails. I went into my web mail account tonight, which I rarely visit, to only find the e-mails were in my trash bin.

It turns out that when e-mails are downloaded, Yahoo sends them to the trash in case you need to recover them. However they don't comment on how long they remain there.

The problem is, e-mails that didn't download are being sent there, along with those that have.

I think the Mail might be timing out when trying to download the e-mail and assuming it has downloaded it.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I've moved the e-mails out of the trash into my web mail inbox but Mail won't download them because it thinks it has downloaded them. Does anyone know how to make it think it hasn't downloaded them?

Yahoo changed their policy back in 2011 but if they hadn't, I imagine I'd have lost e-mails totally and I probably have, given I wasn't aware of his problem until today.

I'm using Mountain Lion 10.8.4. I will try rebuilding my mail database to see if that helps with the downloading. I found my last computer had issues after a while. All fine to start with. Now I keep all my e-mails so I don't have an empty database.

UPDATE: I set up a load of IMAP accounts in Mail, one for each Yahoo based e-mail address. I had previously moved all my mail from the trash folders to my inbox on the web mail yahoo site. This enabled them to download into Mail. I then set about moving them to various folders.

Rather convoluted but it was the only way. I got the idea from a web site I came across whilst searching (don't have address to hand now). They were talking about Outlook but I figured the same would apply to Mail.

As an aside, I found out that Yahoo had switched back on my spam filters which I had previously switched off. They upgraded their web mail late 2011 but in doing so, didn't tell users that spam filters would be switched back on. The other annoying thing is that, unlike GMX mail, which I also use, they don't tell you if you have spam. If they told me I had spam, I would have known to go and see what was going on and dealt with the issue much sooner.

Now I don't use web mail so I was unware of the problem. Not sure how many e-mails got deleted by Yahoo. However in one account I went into, I had 55 e-mails in the spam and none were spam. They were mostly from mailing lists or sites I've bought stuff from and I'm happy to receive e-mails from. Now that was just within the last month alone.

All rather annoying. I am eventually going to set up my own mail server so hopefully that will stop such problems, although I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with technical problems instead, since I'll be using my Synology DiskStation.
