Mail Not Working With Gmail All Of A Sudden?

I have had this account working for a long time.

I noticed this morning that for some reason it has not updated itself since yesterday.

It will not receive any mails even if I click on get new.

I managed to send a small mail as a test to myself, but it did not arrive in my mailbox on the MBP but on my iPhone.

To send a blank email it took ages, and it was displaying the upload speed of 118kbps for ages, even though the mail size was tiny.

Mail is unresponsive as I cannot quit it, I have to force quit.

Please help.
