Since I updated to macOS 15.4, Mail is just not starting.

The app launches and… nothing. No window, no menu, no error message.

I have to go to the “force app to quit” menu. I see the Mail app in the list marked as “not responding” and I can kill it.

Restart don’t change a thing. Mail seems just dead.

Anyone experiencing that too ?

Edit : I use an M2 Mac mini (French as language)

I'm seeing the exact same problem, I do have multiple mailboxes, Mail refuses to open
I got it to start !

Thanks to your comment, I had the idea to go to system preferences, searched for mail, and I could deactivate accounts one by one.
I deactivated iCloud the last, and Mail starts again.

Of course, none of my messages appear but that’s a start…

When I opened Mail first time after updating to 15.4, then it took some time and window "Upgrading Mail databases" appeared. It took quite some time for Mail to finally open.

This unresponsivity might be related to same thing and patience might be the solution here...

Well, more than 24hours already… I consider myself patient.

The thing is I didn’t even get the window that says “going to upgrade”.

I made it back to work. Here are the steps I followed. I don't know if all of them are necessary, but it worked for me.

1 - In the Library folder, there is a Mail folder, I moved it to another folder in my home directory.
2 - In the System settings app, I disable all mails account
3 - I started Mail. It immediately started, showing a window saying it would import data, but as there is no data to import, it then goes to an empty Mail window.
4 - That Mail window shows the new "Category" feature. I disabled it.
5 - **With Mail still open**, I went back to the System settings app, and I enabled **one** mail account. It instantly shows up in the Mail window, and synchronise with your mail server.
6 - **Don't touch anything** I waited around 10 minutes.
7 - Quit and relaunch Mail.
8 - Did the same with another mail account.
9 - From time to time, when you relaunch Mail, it doesn't start. Go over the **full** procedure again.
10 - Re-activate iCloud as the **very last account**.

Now Mail is working (I had to reconfigure some smtp server, but I think this is not related).
But if you stored some mails locally, you don't have access to them because of step 1.

In Mail File menu, there is an "Import Mailbox" item. Choose, and import the mailboxes from the folder you copied at step 1.
Done.

I hope that helps.
