Mail on iPad - delete

Why is it so easy to archive things, but so hard to delete them. I can swipe or tap the icon to archive, but to delete I have to open it, and move it to the trash.

am I missing something?

Try This

In the window that lists all of your emails there is place in the upper right hand
corner that says edit. If you hit that a little circle will appear just to the left of each of you email listings. Just click the circle or several of them and hit the delete key at the bottom of the window. Viola selected emails deleted.

You could always move your mail into the All Mail to archive or Trash to delete, but you cannot have additional icons. Sorry.
