Mail on iPad iOS 8.1.2

Guys, the Mail app on my iPad Air 2 is driving me insane.

Is there any way to set it up so that the most recent mail is not automatically read? Right now I have my inbox on a side bar to the right. And the right hand lane shows the email.

I want mail to be like on my Mac where the inbox takes up the entire screen and an email is only read if you open up that email.

Right now even if I delete an email, the next email down automatically becomes Read!

It's a little bit silly, but the only solution I have found to this is "flag" the message and mark it as "unread".

Thanks mate. That's exactly what I've bee doing )when I've forced myself to use it). I use my Nexus 5 for a better email service. Oh the irony!
