Hi

I have just acquired a 6 month old imac and set up the mailbox.

It has downloaded all the messages from my gmail account since setting it up in 2004, even ones I had deleted. There are now 5377 messages and counting!

Any ideas why it's doing this and more important how do I cure it?

I am a Mac newbie after spending umpteen years with the frustration of PCs.:)

Mail.app needs to synchronize with your gmail account, that's why it's downloading all the messages. This will allow you to access your mail even when you don't have an internet connection.
If you don't want Mail.app to store those messages then you can change your account preferences. Go to Mail.app's preferences, click on accounts, select your gmail account, click on advanced, then select the appropriate option below where it says 'Keep copies of messages for offline viewing:'.
