Perhaps I missed a key tutorial when I upgraded to Mavericks last year... Mail has been a nightmare for me since then... and I'm a very experienced Mac user, going on 28 years now.

I have 20 separate email accounts in mail. A mix of POP and gmail. I can receive and send mail just fine. I'm not having problems with gmail.

My problem is that the Mail program is deleting any mail left in my INBOX after 30 days. I've searched settings, etc., but can't find anything related to an automated archiving or deleting of inbox items.

It did something similar when I first installed it and caused me all sorts of grief, and it deleted -- or failed to import -- hundreds of emails I'd saved because they had serial numbers, license keys or were receipts. I paid for and got a physical drive with my remote backup (I backup locally as well) because Mavericks refused to let me import the 'lost' emails.

Primarily my customer emails auto-sort into folders via rules I've set up, as do vender emails. But I'm hard-pressed to figure out what the heck is going on with the ones left in my inbox. For my gmail accounts I'm not too worried about it because I just log in to google and find them (though I really shouldn't have to!), but my POP accounts... I remove those from the server and other than my TimeMachine or my remote backup, I have no access.

What are the "On My Mac" Archive items? I haven't touched them since installing Mavericks and don't even know what they do. I've got one for every mailbox, but they seem to be empty, or at least nothing happens when I click on one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried to find a comprehensive explanation for the changes in Apple's Mail program and how best to use it, but I mostly keep finding articles and posts about the gmail problem. I'd just as soon try to figure out the problem before attempting to restore the old emails. Been down that road.
