Mail Problems--Not deleting mail on any accounts

I am running 10.9.5 and I set up my e-mail accounts in Apple Mail for Gmail and Windows Live (formerly Hotmail)--all set up as IMAP. I am trying to prune my accounts so I am not wasting space and looking at outdated e-mails. I delete e-mails and then when I come back, they are back again as if I did not delete them.

Please help.
