Mail Rapidly Opens New Message Viewer Windows on Start-up

Ok. This is bizarre, but...

When I click to start Mail, it rapidly opens window after window of message viewer starting with todays mail and moving backward.

It is extremely rapid and eventually kills mail.

How do I stop it from opening message viewer windows on start-up?
