Mail receiving the same messages over and over

On another note, my computer screen has been blacking out without shutting down, and my Mail issue started occurring after I forced a restart. The problem is that Mail keeps receiving the same 279 emails every time I fetch mail plus whatever mail is actually new. The issue is not that emails are being left on the server because this doesn't happen on my ipod and it never happened before with the same settings. And I removed all of the messages on the server with the buttton in preferences.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Mail on my iMac has been downloading old email ever time I reboot. It's been doing that since shortly before maverick so was released.

I am still on OS X 10.6.8 so upgrades aren't my issue here.
