Mail sending problems when tethered

When I am tethered and send email from my laptop and if the outbox has been idle for about 10 minutes or more, sending fails and the mail just stays in the outbox. There is no error.

If I close and re-open mail, the mail sends.

This only happens when tethered (o2).

Any ideas?
