Mail Slider Possible to Change Starting Position?

The slider in Mail aways starts out at the top and for me that is my oldest emails. I'd like the slider to start out at the bottom or at least stay where I left off. Is it possible to change default it to my most current emails without the top being listed as my new emails?
 
If it makes any difference, I upgraded to Sierra from OS10.5. The slider would always be at the bottom of my email listings.
