Mail = Spinning Pinwheel

After I updated my system on 12/4/09 with an iMovie Update, a Java for Mac OS X 10.6 update, a Canon Printer Drivers update and an iPhoto update, "Mail" and "Address Book" no longer work. Both launch but lock up and the pinwheel (or beach ball) spins and spins and spins, eventually generating an error message ("Mail quit unexpectedly" "Address Book quit unexpectedly").

Any thoughts as to what is going on?
