Mail through uni network (VPN) - problems

I use Mail for my gmail account and when at home/other wifi networks all goes fine. However when i'm connected through my uni network, through Cisco VPN client, the web works perfectly but Mail doesn't. When i try to send messages, I get the message below. What should i do?

"Cannot send message using this server"
"Select a different outgoing mail server"

It's set up for the smtp.gmail.com server which works fine at home

I just received an email, so the problem seems to be solely sending them.

Are you running IMAP?

It could be that port 143 is blocked at your university.

Not to my knowledge. On the gmail settings tab it's only forwarding and POP, and i've got POP enabled.
