Mail window not visible

Recently, when starting Mail, the menu bar appears at the top of the display, but the Mail window does not appear. I am therefore unable to access my mail or folders. Most of the menu items, including Preferences are grayed out. For the past year, I have had similar problems after successfully opening Mail (in that clicking on dock icon would only bring up menu bar), but could navigate to the Mail window by way of Mission Control. Now, there is no Mail window in Mission Control.

I am on OS 10.10.5 and use a 15 inch MacBook Pro mid 2010.

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.
