Mail won't obey its preferences (check for new mail)

In mail preferences, under the accounts section, each account will have a "Include when automatically checking for new messages" preference as follows:



However, it doesn't seem to work. Mail won't check messages initially, but once I hit the check for new messages button, all subsequent timed checks (those that are automatic) include the disabled account.

Is this a bug, or am I missing something else?

I am not sure if you did the following, but if you go to the general tab in mail preferences, did you set the "check for new messages" to manually or something like every 5 minutes??
