iPod touch Mail won't refresh?

So I got an iPod touch 8 GB two days ago; when I first set up Mail for my gmail, it checked my e-mail and I had one unread message in the inbox. Now every time I try to update/refresh it, it either won't do anything, or says "checking for mail..." for a couple of minutes and then goes back to "mail last checked at (the first time I looked)", and never changes the inbox from how it was when I first checked. What's up, why won't it refresh my mail?

try restarting your ipod and see if that fixes it. hold down the home and sleep/wake button until you see the apple logo.
