Mail, word, and MIME problems

My mom has been having problems when sending word docs via Mail.app.

The facts.

She is using Office 98 in classic.
Recipients are not able to open the docs

Error Message to recipient:
This e-mail contains a MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) file. The file was specially formatted to be sent over the Internet. For more information on opening the attached file, go to Keyword: MIME.]

When she forwarded a message with a word doc already attached it opened fine.
I checked the raw source for the emails and noticed apple double compression in the bad ones. Also, the Content-Type was changed from application/msword to application/applefile. Any email gurus out there who can pinpoint this problem and offer a solution?
