I got iMac 24" desktop in office and a white macbook

I have apple mail up and running on iMac collects mail from a few different account no problems.

I set it up on Macbook it will not accept the password! I have checked settings and made sure every setting on macbook is identical to the ones on iMac. but still i get message that the SMTP server rejected the password. I haven't changed the password and the smtp server doesn't reject it when collect mail using iMac, in fact it sends it automatically I never have to press 'get mail'

I only noticed recently that iPhoto is not on the macbook either (I bought it second hand off ebay) so I downloaded picasa as I only put few pics on here, its mainly for chatting in evening.

Should I delete and reinstall mail, is there a more recent update that may work? I'm stumped as to why it works on one computer but not the other when they have identical settings.

Also I tried Thunderbird 3 but I cant even get into mail it takes ages then said connection to server has timed out.

Any ideas why I cant get mail programs to work on this macbook please?
