Mail Problem

After I connected to my Google mail acct. with the Apple Mail it will not shut down. No quit. So, I tried to restart and that won't work until I can get the app to quit. Sort of stuck here and don't wanat to get myself in deeper. Nor does the mail window show up in the finder now.

When I synched Google Mail I got 486 downloads of messages all the way back to last year that had never come through from 2013, Winter. I tried to delete them all as they were not relevant and it was during the deletions that the Apple Mail froze on me. I cannot restart the iMac or get Apple Mail to quit. The black dot on the dock remains there and right clicking to quit does nothing. I have no mail window and no way of restarting the computer. Other than that nothing else is affected. I was considering buying a different email client but that defeats the fix that is needed. I amy buy an email client anyway as I am not sure I like Apple Mail. I could never get it to work correctly on my Mac Pro and the same problems appear to be there with this one. Of course, it could be operator error so I am waiting to see what the forum has to say. Thank you for any assistance.
