Mailing lists and smart mailboxes

I just switched over to Apple's Mail client and I'm liking it a lot so far. One thing that I haven't figured out yet is how to filter my mailing lists using "smart mailboxes."

I thought something like this would work:

.. but all the emails still end up in my normal inbox. When I click the smart mailbox on the sidebar it's empty. What am I missing here?

Why the * ?

To catch all @ubuntu.com addresses, since I'm on multiple lists. I tried without the * and it's the same thing.
