Firefox 3's javscript performance speed is #1 among all shipping browsers, safari 4 is said to including squirrelfish which currently is 1.5x faster than firefox 3's engine.
now at Mozilla, major evolution over past two months has pushed javascript performance to a new high.
New engine "traceMonkey", an decedent of mozilla's spider monkey engine, now improve the javascipt speed up to 30x (depends on individual items). Overall gain at sunspider is 1.83x so far.
The J(ust) I(n) T(ime) is already landed on nightly trunk, its pref'ed off by default, open it by going to about:config and toggle value for javascript.options.jit.content , this change will mostly likely out for end-users with firefox 3.1 which will be out in first half of 2009.
above linked blog has more tech details in case you want to write your own
PS. this is not actionmonkey or javascript engine for gecko 2.0, but sure will be a big part of it.
PS2. Tracemonkey isn't done yet, so expect more to come for firefox 3.1's javscript performance.
PS3. This is also a further fundation for firefox mobile and firefox-64bit, since tracemonkey is compatible with x86, x86-64, and ARM.
Thanks again to the great work at UC Irvine and Mozilla. Long live the Open Source Cooperation.
