I'm having major problems with rendering time on a two-week-old iMac running Express 4.

I'll import files (these are like 5 - 30MB QT files), work with them, and then when I want to play them through the "canvas" window, it takes OVER AN HOUR to render. This is for something that is no more than 3 minutes long, has no transitions, composites, extra audio tracks -- nothing.

When I do the same thing with 400MB files on my older G5 running Express 2, it takes 5 minutes.

Let me run down the stats:

iMac, 24-inch, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM: 4 GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2 GB
VIDEO: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/512MB GDDR3
HDD: 320GB Serial ATA Drive
OS: 10.5.4
Final Cut Express 4

VS:

Power Mac G5, 2.5 GHz
RAM: 2 GB
VIDEO: ATI AGP 128 MB
HDD: 150GB Serial ATA Drive
OS: 10.4.10
Final Cut Express 2

Now, I wasn't using the same files, and someone has suggested there may be issues with the files on the iMac using codecs that Express doesn't like (haven't tested the theory yet), but is there something else that everyone's missing?

I've run through my "Mac Guy" at work, an Apple Store guy who does classes on Final Cut at the store, and someone at my office that used to do video editing on a Mac for a living ...

IDEAS? PLEASE?!
