Apple has told component suppliers it wants iPhone 16 batteries to be made in India, as part of the company's efforts to diversify its global supply chain and reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing.

The Financial Times reports that Apple has informed battery suppliers including China's Desay and Taiwan's Simplo Technology of its preference to have batteries for next year's iPhone made in India, and has encouraged the manufacturers to establish new factories there or scale up production at existing sites for future orders.

"If all goes well with iPhone 16 battery supply, Apple plans to move more iPhone battery production to India," said one of the people close to Apple who spoke to FT.

Apple already works with Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata (new owner of Wistron) to manufacture iPhones in India, with Foxconn handling 75 to 80 percent of the device assembly. Foxconn has invested more than $500 million in India to ramp up its manufacturing capabilities.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that 12 to 14 percent of global ‌iPhone‌ shipments are made in India, with that proportion to increase to 20 to 25 percent by 2024. Introductory production on the standard iPhone 17 will start in India in the second half of 2025, according to Kuo, marking the first time that Apple begins development of a new ‌iPhone‌ outside of China.

In addition to allowing Apple to move manufacturing away from China, increasing production in India provides Apple with an opportunity to strengthen its relationship with the Indian government. India is a key market for Apple due to growing demand for Apple products in the country.

India is the world’s most populous democracy.
China is not.
I hope this helps.
So it has the most people in it, whats that got to do with sweat shops? Having when younger spent 6 months travelling around India it was an amazing place but god help the people that had to fix the power supply cables on the poles along with every other cable you can imagine tangled up with them plus a few snakes for good measure too.

commenters gonna be thrilled Apple is bending the knee to a different slave labor state than china

India is following the same path as China, Korea etc in trying to lift its people out of poverty. This is quote about iphone assembly plant from a substack I follow.

This is the universal tale of industrialization, and it’s a beautiful and terrible one at the same time. It’s a story of ruthless labor exploitation, urban ennui, and harsh working conditions. But it’s also the story of workers escaping what Marx called “the idiocy of rural life”, finding their own way in the world, making money and winning their independence. And it’s the story of a country that is primed to become much richer in the near future.

So Apple is reducing its reliance on Chinese Manufacturing by telling Chinese Vendors to setup shops in India?

How about making them in America….
Sorry bruh India is next destination for manufacturing whether you hate the fact or not. Same with Samsung/Oppo/Vivo/Nothing/OnePlus. Have you seen the massive infrastructure that is getting build up as we speak? The Indian government means business.

China is the No. 1 enemy of the world in terms of manufacturing and the only way to tame them is via creating favourable environment for companies to move in our own country. Can USA do that?

I'm sorry but once the iPhones start being manufactured in India, the quality built/reliability of the iPhones will go down hill rapidly. Once Apple starts getting cheap with the workmanship of their products their fame will rapidly go down hill, and from the looks of things that is where Apple is headed as of 2025.

Ok genuine question here. This seems like a strange thing to say. It kind of seems like they are using their influence to order companies to make foreign investments. Are there no Indian battery companies they can “tell” (ie pay) to produce the batteries?

Even if this is a net positive for everyone it seems like a strange thing to say.

People used to say the same thing about China. Still do. That’s why there are Made in China stickers. That law from forever ago was specifically targeting them. Didn’t matter.

I don’t think it’s impossible for Apple to get good batteries out of India.

And Japan before that... Then Japan became the place everyone went to learn how to manufacture. Operations is now where you're most likely to find borrowed Japanese words in English.

It's easier for Apple to work with a company they've already developed to the standards they demand than it is to start from scratch.

In the short run, this will mean their supplier is responsible for setting up the production facility (which that supplier has experience with) and training a new workforce to operate and inspect the product (which the supplier has experience with) to meet Apple's specifications without compromise (which that supplier has already been beaten into submission on).

In the medium term, this moves the factories outside the territorial control of China, meets the demands of governments and consumers demanding a reduced reliance on China, and reduces the flow of investment into China but does it in a way that doesn't make their current suppliers feel jilted and less committed to current production and kind of boils the frog with the Chinese government.

In the long term the Indian people will gain expertise in these production techniques and then become available to start or staff new, Indian, manufacturers-- eventually becoming familiar enough to be able to advance the state of the art through their own R&D.
