I bought a wifi hotspot recently. I don't want to use up my data so quickly, but when I'm on wifi, the iPhone uses so much more data compared to 3G. Is there any way to make the iPhone to use less data on wifi?

No, nothing you can do to make the iphone use less data on wifi beside watching your usage and try not to stream too much video or audio.

I guess there is not much I could do about it. It's just annoying to see how I would use about 10 MB with 3G and with the same usage I use about 30 MB with hotspot :(

On some things like youtube videos the iphone on 3G loads a smaller but fuzzy video to save on bandwith and time it takes to buffer. On wifi the video would look a lot cleaner and better.
I know a few other apps that also stream lower quality over 3G to save time on loading and buffering.
Not much you can do to change that, its done internally.
