So i've had a few problems getting an external USB drive to work with Time Machine and have re-partitioned it twice. Each time I found that If I simply named it the same Time Machine would IMMEDIATELY start using it. If I named it something different Time Machine would politely ask if I wanted to use the disk for time machine.

Any how, I'm returning the disk as I've failed to successfully use it without disk IO errors. I'm going to get a different brand disk but I'd really like to clean up TM and get rid of any previous knowledge of volumes.

How do I do that?

Mark.

In /Library/Preferences there's a TM plist file (com.apple.TimeMachine.plist), you might try renaming it or deleting it. Other than that AFAIK the only configuration options are in the the TM Preferences (right-click on the icon in the menu bar).
