If you double the pixels both ways on an iPod Touch, you'll get 1920 x 1280 rather than the rumored 1024 x 768.

That gives you better PPI than the iPad 3, but less than the current iPod Touch. Perfect range for "retina" quality given the closer eye distance of a smaller tablet.

I also like the iPod Touch's aspect-ratio, which works well for smaller devices.
 
ipod touch is a useless device if you ask me.

Its a good thing no one asked you then.

The screen resolution idea makes sense. Interestingly enough, if you double the pixels as well as the diagonal screen measurement, you'd have a 7" screen with the same pixel density as the iPod touch
