making an image of a fresh install of os x..

hi, i was wondering if i did a fresh install on mac os x on my macbook pro, and installed all the apps and configured all the things, such as the dock.

then made an image file to a external drive.
would that be possible? or is it easier and more efficient to just install all the apps and such whenever i need to do a fresh install?
