i have a basic network set up and working well. i set it up
fairly generically to get things going and want to make some
changes now but am running into some problems.

Machine Name: Mac Pro
Machine Model: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 5 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B04
SMC Version: 1.7f8

i have some external sata drives hooked into the mac and
have set them up to share with an xp home pc. it's worked
well through the setup but i now want to give the external
drives more descriptive names than the generic 'drive 1,'
'drive 2' i started out with.

when i change the name of the drive, using 'get info' and
entering a new name, the pc retains the drive's old name
and is unable to access the drive. this continues through
both a restart of the 'computer browser' service on the pc,
as well as a reboot. 'sharing' is active on the mac.

i'm unsure if the mac is still sending the old name or if the
pc is storing the old name. if i toggle the name back and
forth, renaming it, and then reverting it back to the original
name, it becomes accessible or inaccessible depending on
which name is currently applied, so i know the network
remains intact.

what do i have to do to be able to rename these drives
and maintain their accessibility to the pc?

thanks,
BabaG

i have 'computer name' but i didn't change that.
then there are three tabs: services, firewall, internet

under 'services' i have 'windows sharing' checked.
(tried stopping and restarting the service)

then there is a button for accounts.
nothing changed there either.

haven't made any changes in the 'firewall' or 'internet'
sections either.

this is driving me crazy.
