On a windows machine, pressing control then either left or right arrow moves the cursor a whole "word" over. You can combine this with shift to easily highlight specific words.

This has become important to my programming habits. On OS X it just moves to the front of the line.

How do I change this? :D

Unfortunately, this is implemented inconsistently in OS X applications.

OS X and most Apple apps will move to start/end of line on Command+cursor. To move to the next word, you use Option+cursor.

However, many applications reverse this behavior or implement just one of the shortcuts. In Adobe applications, Option+cursor will actually adjust kerning (if applicable).

In most cases, you should try switching between Option and Command. It's annoying, but your fingers learn what to do in each app eventually.
