I added a second SSD,(an Intel 520 series 240GB), to the optical bay drive of my mid-2010 MacBook Pro and after much searching on getting my internal DVD/CD Superdrive to work externally...I can finally claim success!!
After removing the DVD/CD drive and enclosing it in an external drive case, my MacBook Pro would not recognize it when I plugged it in to my USB port. I found a VERY useful article explaining how to change the DVDPlayback framework to find and replace the words internal to external in the script so that my MacBook Pro would recognize the drive and make it functional. I did what the article suggested....and it worked!!
I thought that I would share this here to help anyone else that may have encountered the same problem.
