When I make mix CDs in iTunes, I often end up cutting out intros and outtros in songs, or trimming silence at the end to make the songs mix together well on the CD.
I wish iTunes localized the start/stop time edits to the playlist, instead of putting them in the song file, so that the effect only takes on the playlist. Like, on hip-hop CDs, I don't care for the skits in-between songs on a mix CD, but I like them when I go back and listen to the original album.
Is there any workaround to this? I guess I could make a "mix" album and copy the duplicate the files into it, and then edit the copies, but that's a pain, and I either have to use up extra space on my iPod, or use the check boxes to avoid putting the extra copies on my iPod, and then not be able to listen to the smoother versions of the mixes on my iPod.
BTW, there was a thread recently about smart playlists and stuff. I mostly don't use them b/c I prefer to design something that makes the songs flow smoothly.
Anyone else out there put some effort into making playlists or mixes? What are your tricks?
I mostly look at the tempo and the timbre (like whether it's drums or singing or what) at the beginning and end of songs to mix them together. Sometimes, I try to bring in songs from my CDs that I skip over when I listen to the original CD, but like enough that if I put them in the right place in a mix, I'll actually listen to them.
