Hi guys.

I've just replaced my stock hardware 500gb HDD room SSD. However I've heard I should not use the SSD as a designation for downloads. (I download things all the time)

So I want to use my optical drive to insert my old 500gb.

Can you tell me what caddy I need to buy to replace this?

Macbook pro "13 mid-2010 model.

Thank you for your support

Any caddy for your model will work, you simply have to google a bit and find one at the price-point you like.

I wouldn't worry about downloading to the SSD, it will likely outlive the computer it's been put in regardless of use.

I agree

If you really want a caddy just search Amazon or eBay for MacBook Pro caddy look at reviews / models.

If you need the drive space, by all means go ahead and install the second drive. But if you are doing it just because of what you read about downloading to the SSD.... don't bother. It won't hurt the SSD.

What you likely read is frequent write activity to an SSD will shorten its lifespan. While this is true in theory, even with a lot of downloading that SSD will likely outlast your computer. See this test.

Don't sweat it and just enjoy your SSD.

Want just because of that. I only purchased a 120 gb SSD. (So expensive for a 5 year old laptop investment) and it's a waste to throw my 500gb hhd away. But thanks for the feedback. Got myself a caddy

P.s
Does replacing optical drive make my macbook pro lighter? :D

Dangggggg
You'll see when you pull out your optical drive, you'll be barely able to feel its weight in your hand. It's just stamped (and very thin) aluminum sheet metal and plastic, it weighs basically nothing.

You're adding back in the weight of a caddy plus a hard drive.
