Does anyone know of any packages like MAMP and XAMPP which are being actively maintained? Both of the aforementioned are a bit outdated now on their software releases.

I was running a dev environment within a Windows VMWare VM but I'm experiencing lock ups due to a lack of RAM on occasions (maxing out to 8GB).

If I can run something on OS X directly that'd be ideal - read some criticism over using the inbuilt PHP, etc though. Recommendations?

You can install the separate parts of MAMP... well... separately.

Install the latest version of MySQL. Latest PHP. Latest Apache.

There is no reason you have to use a all-in-one package.

Virtual Box is really good for virtualisation and it lets you run virtualboxheadless so that you don't have to run a gui - this coupled with Ubuntu server (or other of your choice) has worked well for me.
