I too track my vehicles and other items with AirTags but I am stable enough mentally to not take such drastic measure over a possession. A**-kicking maybe, cop notification, certainly, but not murder.

Not sure if it would be considered murder, as the thief drew his weapon first, and the owner was just acting in self defense. The police are not charging the truck owner with anything (yet).

About contacting law enforcement, yeah, definitely a good idea, but there has been many reports of people notifying LEO of stolen property with an AirTag attached, and law enforcement ignoring it (meaning LEO not taking action with the AirTag information).

Actually, it looks like from the story posted by the OP, that when the owner reported the truck stolen to the police, the police was also told by the owner that they could track the truck using an AirTag, but according to the police "but they did not wait for help to arrive", which most likely means that the police ignored it, imo.
