My wife is the family photographer. From Friday to this morning, we downloaded another 761 pictures. That's a normal weekend. Consequently, her iPhoto library has grown to approx 450 GB. I'm finding that hard to manage and also finding that my ATV2 can't seem to load her pictures for a slide show anymore... I assume her library is just too dang big.

Any suggestions?

We had about 10,000photos when our iPhoto library became too unstable to use with confidence.

We looked at Lightroom and Aperture before finally deciding on Lightroom.

We've been happy and not looked back. We only put our top 1% of photos into iPhoto for easy uploading to Facebook/mobileme gallery etc.

I suggest using MRoogle to search for threads about "lightroom or aperture", but most people end up saying that you can download both for 30days trials and then decide. But make sure you have plenty of time to play before you decide.

Can you give me the Reader's Digest story of why you chose Lightroom over Aperture?
