I'm a new iPhone user, and it's such a nicely self-contained device that I hesitate to add headphones.

What do you do with them when you're not listening to music? Wrap them around the iPhone? Keep them in your pocket?

I'd like to have headphones, but if I'm also using apps for GPS, internet, reading, etc., it seems like they'd be more awkward than headphones with an iPod.

I don't really understand why your hesitant to "add" headphones? Your supposed to use headphones when listening to music. That is what you do with mp3 players. When you're not listening to music, unplug your headphones if they are awkward when your using other apps. As far as what you do with them, that doesn't really matter. Some people are OCD and fold them up nicely and put them in a case. I just throw them in my pocket or a bag.
