Managing music with Iphone

I have lot of music that I would like to sort through and delete some. I was listening to it on Iphone and giving 1 star rating to the tracks I want to delete. 4 star was assigned to instrumental music and so on but most of the time I would just skip songs I don't like. Idea was to sync iPhone to iTunes on the computer which would let me select and delete songs with low play counts and organize the rest in playlist using star rating. The problem is that while songs are still listed in the iTunes I lost the hard drive with original music files. Will the sync delete songs from my Iphone? Is there an easier way to manage massive music library?
