Looks like the beginning of the end for Manchester, quite bad too since it's been on the up since the bomb (sparking that whole regeneration malarky).

For kicks, Withington council are running some kind of poll on whether or not the locals want it. It'll be interesting to see the results of that.

I'll probably visit it one time when I'm in Manchester.

out of interest, does Vegas suffer from a lot of gambling addicts, or is it mostly tourists? This is what they are saying will happen in Manchester, bring up a generation of gambling addicts.

They say that Blackpool has the highest number of both suicide rates in the country and the most gambling addicts. Sticking it in a relitively poor part of Manchester isn't a good thing either. It's the poor folk who are going to get the hardest (so the news keep saying).

This might have been nice out of a city, but slap bang *almost* in the middle is ridiculous.

I haven't followed this too closely, but I'm shocked it didn't go to Greenwich or Blackpool... neither do they appear successful in getting the small licenses! You would have thought the Government would have wanted to make something out of 'The Dome' given track history.

Good for Manchester tho - love the regeneration work that's going on there. Might take a look when it's up and running :)

i'm not 100% sure for vegas but most cities with casinos don't allow locals to gamble there.

casinos usually also try not to have gambling teens or bums because in the long run it hurt's their business more than the few bucks they could get from them.

in vegas there is a lot of gambling but also ton's of good shows. if the manchester casino follow that trend you might get a lot of good shows and concerts. that's one good thing that could come from a casino.

I don't see why we needed to built it anywhere. If they wanted to relax the gambling laws, they could have done it with several smaller sites rather than some enormous crappy Atlantic City style monstrosity.

Manchester doesn't need it. I wish it wasn't happening. :(

Super-casino future put in doubt

Plans for a super-casino in Manchester have been thrown into doubt after Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced a review of the government's policy.

Whitehall sources told the BBC the idea of using a super-casino to regenerate run-down areas was "dead in the water".

The PM promised a report on the "social effects" of gambling by September.

...

"In September we will have a report that will look at gambling in our country - the incidence and prevalence of it and the social effects of it," Mr Brown said.

"I hope that during these summer months we can look at whether regeneration in the areas for the super-casinos maybe a better way of meeting their economic and social needs than the creation of super-casinos."

It appears that the super-casino's might be dead in the water.

In Connecticut we have 2 of the biggest casinos in the world and there are no restrictions on who can gamble, As far as I know you can live in the same city as a casino and still be able to gamble. Of course Indian Casinos might have different regulations from state run.

What cities? This isn't the case anywhere in the US. Your credibility suffers quite a bit when you make an outlandish statement like that. Please specify what you're talking about.

Some casinos have rules that don't allow their employees to gamble at their own casino, but that's quite different. Regardless, they're still free to gamble at any other casino in the same city.

Short answer, it's both. There's lots of locals at the poker tables in Vegas, and a disproportionally high % of casino dealers also playing. It should be noted, however, that a lot of these dealers are guys in their 20s that moved to Vegas specifically to deal cards and play poker in their off hours. I had one pro confide to me that the dealers, on the average, seemed to him to be the worst players at the table in the long run. You would think it'd be the opposite, I guess.

So the UK supercasino is binned, nice one Brown :D less than a month in office and he's doing some good!

For peoples info "The Dome" is now the "O2 Arena" :D

Looks like Gordon's had a rethink :)
