Last weekend I got a new 14 Pro (iOS 16.1.1) and transferred everything over directly from my old XR. On all my phones, I have always used iTunes to manually manage my music files (this is from a large library running in iTunes 12.8.2.3 on an old machine running El Capitan 10.11.6). The music all transferred properly – that is, everything is on the phone and plays fine there, including smart playlists – but when I connect the phone none of it appears in iTunes. I tried with a newer computer running Catalina 10.15.7 and the same problem occurs in the Music app, as well as in iTunes 12 installed via Retroactive. In all cases it shows that a big chunk of storage is taken up by audio files, but the place where I should see them is completely empty, and smart playlists aren't shown either. I have successfully done a backup in iTunes, and Photos sees things just fine. I haven't tried copying any music into the empty window, because I don't want it to decide that requires deleting everything that's currently on the phone.

When I search for this problem I don't find anything – a few similar sounding problems have shown up related to having Apple Music turned on, but I don't have it turned on and never have. The only difference when connecting to either machine is that the Catalina one doesn't show "manually manage music" turned on while the El Capitan one (the one that I used to manage the previous phone) does. But the error ultimately is the same. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here? The main management computer is running old stuff, but all versions specifically supported by this phone, and the problem occurs in the newer computer as well.
