Does having many dock items impact startup/boot times in lion or mountain lion? For example, I notice that when I start my early 2011 macbook pro that my desktop loads however the dock appears after some delay. Wondering if deleting dock items will speed that up. I have no items loading on startup. Thanks

Try it. See what happens.

If a populous Dock is a speed problem, you can make folders and group your Dock-items there. For example, if you have a half-dozen drawing-related apps, make a folder "Drawing Tools" and put app aliases in there. Put the folder on the Dock and you now have all tools available but only 1 Dock icon.
