Many multiple duplicates in Contacts

I have recently noticed that some of my contacts have multiple duplicates.

In some cases a dozen or so in others several hundred. Most are single as they should be.

If I click Card - Look for Duplicates, it reports no duplicates !!

Why has this happened and how can I fix it?

Hoping someone has the answer.
